How to link/merge platoons?

I've read about how to do this, but I never can seem to get it to work.

Hold the flag of one platoon over another platoon's flag, and the link or merge command is supposed to appear, only it doesn't. :(

 
That's basicaly how it should work. Try holding the flag still for a couple of seconds.
 
I can never seem to UNlink my guys. Once in a while I can. If you hold the flag of the linked platoon over the platoon they are following, and hold down on the action button, you should get an Unlink option, right? I only get the unlink option 1% of the time. heh.
 
I can't unlink them either.  I tried that, but I've lost my BW2 instruction booklet somewhere and I can't think of a place to look online that'd have basics like that... so I don't even know if I'm doing it right XD

I linked platoon #4 to platoon #3 and #3 got the eagle on top.  I unlinked them by grabbing the flag of platoon #4 and holding it away from platoon #3 and pressing the action button.
