Feed yourself, Damnit!

For as long as I've played, this always stumped me...

Why is my creature asking ME for food, when he perfectly KNOWS he eats grain, and won't simpley feed himself!? I just don't get it, I've summoned food and gave it to him, he STILL doesn't know what to do. What am I missing here?
 
You giving him food isn't the same as him feeding himself.

What I do is teach him to fish and then whenever he's hungry (~50%) take him down to the fish farms and get him to eat. Then reward him once. Livestock is a good food source also. Not grain, since the grain in the fields isn't always ripe and the other source is the storehouse. Keep doing this from the local sources of food and after a while he should start feeding himself.  When he does only reward him lightly and not too often. It's a long process, but basically when he reaches  50% hunger. First distract him from what he's doing and see if he'll feed himself. Most, likely not. Then feed him from whatever is available close by.

Although I've tend not to feed mine grain. He's got a bad habit of taking fron the storehouse whenever he's hungry.

[edit]In thinking about it more. Most of my creatures have been grown on a growth map. Since you should be able to leave the creature alone for long periods. He does need to know how to feed himself first.[/edit]

 
Fish Farm noted. Will teach him to do that as so.

What I mean is that is the AI not comples enough to recongise the creature knows the food spell, and whenever he is hungry, he will feed himself by casting it? It's odd, they will use their spells to react to other behaviors, being on fire, hurt, or buffing themselves, but why not feed themselves?

EDIT: Seems I did not post my real question in my main post, doh, what I would like to know is that the creature knows the food spell, and will not feed himself.
 
Basially, a creature won't cast a food spell to feed himself. That's the way the game is set up.
 
The easy way to teach your creature to Fish is to leash him with the rope leash to the villagers who are going fishing  there are lots on land 1 going to the beach  near your temple. The villagers are quite easy to spot as they carry fishing rods when going fishing.
Just one bit of further info your creature will always be able to find the fish farms but they sometimes don't exist on user made maps.
