Cant teach Ape how to use totem and storage.

Hi , The Scroll in my apes cave says he doesnt know how to use totem and storage house but I did have him tied to both of these for quite a long time and I seen him alone without my supervision picking up crops from the field and tossing them into the storage same goes for trees and casting miracles to increase faith. So is that bug ? and what should I do ?;p
