For my first go at the bonus land, I tried playing Good, impressed all the towns and now I'm at Level 3. It seems to be very slow going for the undead armies at this point, and I really feel it's quite boring. If the only thing that happens next is that the undead armies become more numerous...
I created a new profile, ran though the Japanese and Norse lands, making sure to pick up the statues, then I got to the last land, got the statue, and when I exited the game to take a rest, the bonus land bar appeared, without me having to win the last land.
Well, it looks like you're right. I went through the game again and made sure I collected all the statues and didn't get the bonus land. :(
Oh well. I get to try again with a new profile.
I notice that sometimes I can create large platoons quickly and sometimes it takes a long time. What variables do you have to have in place to create platoons (X amount of food, ore, etc.) Does it matter how much space you have?
I don't think there is a way to lose a town after you win the land. Even if you did demolish everything. I've volcanoed towns and destroyed the town center, but it miraculously comes back after the volcano is gone.
I never bothered with building up the other towns, if I was playing Good I just impressed them and took the migrants and left them empty, if I was playing Evil I would take them over with my army and leave them alone.
